R&D Mechanical Engineer - Systems Integration

POSITION QUALIFICATION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Associate Director of OTM (Oxygen Transport Membrane) Systems Engineering and Integration, you will support commercial as well as pilot scale equipment design and development through materials selection, strength analysis, and design to ensure successful definition, engineering, and construction of high temperature OTM reactors, air pre-heater and other peripheral systems. The position will require strong mechanical engineering aptitude. Familiarity of relevant ASME, API, ASTM, and NFPA codes as well as experience with high temperature materials and equipment design is a plus.
This role requires close coordination with internal and external project stakeholders, and external technology development (R&D) teams. Successful candidates should demonstrate a focus on safety, strong verbal and written communication skills, a team-oriented focus, and an ability to find innovative technical solutions that best meet the needs of the customer.
Conceive innovative conceptual solutions for OTM reactors, components and systems, transform concepts into functional designs and follow the designs through construction working with external fabricators as well as material manufacturers/ suppliers.
Gather required inputs from project stakeholders and R&D technology teams
Work with materials analysis team to ensure previous learnings are implemented in the designs
Summarize design and fabrication requirements and inform other designers and stakeholders as required
Achieve and deliver project cost targets, value propositions, and business cases
Lead reliability initiatives with respect to material selection and strength/life analysis to ensure Praxair standard and applicable code requirements are met
Ensure that the designs meet Praxair’s safety and quality standards

Bachelor’s with 3 years' experience OR Master’s with 2 years’ experience, degree in Mechanical Engineering
Skilled in 3D modelling (SolidWorks), part and assembly designs
Proven experience performing strength calculations and FEA (finite element analysis) of components and assemblies (SolidWorks or Ansys)
Experience with pipe stress analysis (Autopipe or equivalent)
Experience working with fabricators and inspection requirements for industrial equipment
Experience specifying pipe and metal joints
Knowledge of high temperature resistant alloys and their fabrication requirements
Familiarity with ASME, API, ASTM, and NFPA code requirements
