The mechanical commissioning specialist is accountable to work in a multi-discipline team consisting of engineers and technicians with the goal of commissioning and starting up static and rotating equipment.

Principal job functions:

  • Provides guidance on assembly, functional checkout, commissioning and startup of mechanical equipment including but not limited to installation, leveling, alignment, loop checks, pre commissioning activities, lube oil flushing etc. of the following types of equipment: Centrifugal, Reciprocating and Screw Compressors, Centrifugal Pumps, Turbines, Synchronous and Induction Motors, High-speed Gearboxes, Heat Exchangers, Cryogenic Interchangers, Chillers and Cooling Towers, Piping systems and other related process equipment.

  • Manages daily activities of on-site checkout/testing phases of both static and rotating equipment

  • Audits activities and develops punch lists of mechanical contractors during and at close out of installation

  • Provides planning input and start up strategy development, scheduling, prioritization and work sequencing

  • Identify and report design and or FCN related issues that occur during commissioning and lead the necessary resources towards resolution

  • Develop and implement solutions to field commissioning problems, and provide technical problem-solving leadership within the commissioning team. Document final design changes.

  • Enlist assistance from internal and external engineers and other technical resources, as needed, to assist with core job functions.

  • Interface with project stakeholders as needed to support job functions.

  • Drive resolution of highest impact issues with a strong sense of urgency and integrity.

  • Work independently and make decisions based on full awareness of cost and other benefits.


  • Travel is required to various Praxair sites in order to complete assignments, participate in learning activities, and/or for group and individual training.

  • Minimum 10 years experience in the Petrochemical Industry with emphasis on Mechanical Pre-Commissioning, Commissioning, and Startup and Operations.

  • Must be able and willing to adapt to a work schedule that coincides with plant/location operational needs and travel to facilities within the region.

  • Must be able and willing to perform the following:

  • Climb ladders and steps on multi-story process platforms.

  • Collect process data at elevated levels on permanent and temporary structures such as scaffolds.

  • Spend time outdoors at any time of the year to supervise field activities lasting several weeks

  • Excellent communication and team interaction skills

  • Ability to work independently as well as lead/participate on teams

  • Familiarity with computers and standard computer software packages

  • Familiarity with standard industrial equipment and industrial maintenance best practices such as planning, PM programs, predictive technologies and spare parts management.
